Voices From The Lake – Voices From The Lake II

Voices From The Lake’s eponymous album came out way back in 2o12, and I’ve probably returned to it on a nearly weekly basis every since. Donato Dozzy and Neal’s collaborative project started as a one-off live performance in the Japanese Alps before birthing an album that, according to the press notes, “become a touchstone in ambient techno, reshaping the global landscape of hypnotic and atmospheric electronic music.” I heartily agree. I cannot express how much I’ve loved this album over the last decade and more. The follow up, Voices From The Lake II, arrived today, and is already in my top 10 of the year.

Donato Dozzy & Tin Man – Test 3 (Vocal Version)

The now 10 year old Acid Test 09 sees a special anniversary edition repress with a new vocal mix of track Test 3 which arguably distracts from the near-perfect bubbling simplicity of the original, but is nevertheless a nice reminder of how brilliant this collaboration was.

Donato Dozzy – Le Chaser

After various collaborative projects over the past few years, Donato Dozzy finally gives us what we all want: a solo ambient techno album, tailor-made to make us weepy. “An emotional homage to family and the Adriatic Sea” (!), Magda is absolute fucking perfection and if it’s not in my top 10 albums this year, it will have been a frankly ridiculous year for music. At times evoking, possibly even surpassing his seminal Voices From The Lake project, if you don’t like Le Chaser at least, we can’t be friends.

Donato Dozzy – wooden dolls don’t cry

Dozzy! Dozza! The Big Doz! Everyone’s favourite Italian polyrhythmic techno don returns to Tresor Records with a four track EP 124 which includes this headscramblingly relentless chugger. “Down the rabbit hole we go!!” I’d probably say if I were an ageing music PR with a fairly limited vocabulary and not enough time to come up with something more original. Oh wait…

Il Quadro di Troisi – Sfere di Qi

A while back I posted about Raggio verde, the first track of a new project by Andrea Noce (Eva Geist) and Donato Scaramuzzi aka Donato Dozzy aka one of my very favourite electronic producers of all time. It turns out that I’m such a big fan of his that I completely missed the release of the full, self-titled album last month. Anyway, it’s brilliant, and Sfere di Qi is just one of many of the tracks that balance Dozzy’s trademark hypnotic polyrhythms with Geist’s wonderfully evocative vocals.

Il Quadro di Troisi – Raggio Verde

Il Quadro di Troisi is a new project by Andrea Noce (Eva Geist) and Donato Scaramuzzi aka Donato Dozzy aka one of the greatest electronic producers of all time, and one half of Voices From The Lake, who are responsible for the best mix ever. If you’ve come here expecting stripped-back, hypnotic dub techno however, you’re in the wrong place. Il Quadro Di Troisi is inspired by the late Italian actor and director Massimo Troisi and looks to pay tribute tribute to Italian popular music over the decades, touching on Italo disco, synth pop and more, all of which are harnessed in Raggio Verde.

German label Raster will release full album 16 October digitally, and on vinyl and CD 13 November. Until then, bask in the nostalgic greatness of the Green Ray.
