zakè, Coppice Halifax – Regeneration Survey

Built entirely from source material supplied by zakè, Brian Grainger, working as Coppice Halifax, has somehow teased rhythms, melodies and entire compositions from recordings that contained no beats or obvious musical framework to begin with, uncovering possibilities that feel both surprising and strangely inevitable.

The result is Tree Grid, a collaborative LP that sits somewhere between reinterpretation and reinvention, never losing sight of where these sounds came from but constantly pushing them into unexpected territory. It’s also the first glimpse of what looks set to become a deeper collaboration between two artists whose approaches seem to complement each other remarkably well. If this doesn’t make my end of year shortlist I will be astonished.

36 & zakè – Stasis Sounds For Long-Distance Space Travel III

In the last few years, 36 has become one of my favourite artists, although I became a fan after he started his Statis Sounds… series with zakè, so don’t feel like I’ve been a part of that particular journey. Stasis Sounds For Long-Distance Space Travel III is the final part of the trilogy, made up of two long pieces: “Final Approach” and “Blue New World.”

As with the first two volumes, it’s cinematic in scope and carefully paced, built around slow-moving drones, soft static, and layered synth work. “Final Approach” includes some striking use of low-end and piano, while “Blue New World” leans into heavier, darker textures, and there’s even a nod to doom and drone influences in places, though still within the ambient framework. It’s an immersive final chapter to the series.

zakè & Tyresta – Undiscovered

The Worlds We Leave Behind, the second full-length from the duo of zakè (aka Zach Frizzell) and Tyresta (aka Nick Turner), opens with Undiscovered; a heavenly, inviting glide that occupies a full quarter of the album’s run time. It sets the scene perfectly with a bedrock drone beneath a cyclical, ascending melodic theme, until gently shifting into shadows and choral loveliness in its final third.
