Romance – As I Lay On My Bed

Originally released as a mixtape 5 years ago, there’s now a florescent pink vinyl edition to celebrate the first Romance release on Ecstatic, You Must Remember This. Fusing ambient texture with the emotive sweep of Hollywood’s golden-age symphonic soundtracks, this new version includes separated tracks, a full remaster of the original release, and two previously unheard bonus cuts from the archive.

Romance – End Titles

Romance’s latest album, Love Is Colder Than Death, is perhaps their bleakest to date. From the ghostly, pitched down vocals on opener Too Much Love to End Titles, the final (and most striking) track, the album is drenched in not just melancholy, but misery. And I love it. End Titles shares much of its DNA with The Caretaker’s ballroom deconstructions, but without dropping entirely into despair – although it does get pretty close. Majestically moody stuff.

Not Waving, Romance – Love Pervade The Sinless Breast

Possibly my favourite ambient pairing, Not Waving and Romance, return with their latest LP Wings of Desire, inspired by Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus. And if that sounds catastrophically pretentious – correct! But ambient pretentiousness really does result in some of the best track names in music (honourable mention to Dylan Henner on this front). Love Pervade The Sinless Breast (!) is gorgeous, sweeping, mournful: everything you need to start your week with a bang.

Not Waving, Romance – From The Weary Earth To The Sapphire Walls

Last seen joining forces on their transcendent new album Infinite Light, Not Waving and Romance are back with a fantastically named new single, about which I can find absolutely nothing online save for a YouTube upload with a mere 77 plays. If more people liked this kind of celestial ambient droning, the world would be a significantly better place.

Not Waving & Romance – Infinite Light

This blog is leaning ever more exclusively into ambient, so if you’re not into that – I’m sorry. But it’s hard not to when there’s so much good/weird/dreamy stuff around. Here, Not Waving and Romance take inspiration from Botticelli’s ‘The Birth of Venus’ on their third full-length LP Infinite Light, and the album’s title track is unquestionably its centrepiece; a ten-minute celestial epic to send even the hardest-lined of atheists quivering to their knees.

Romance – Never Will

Released as a Bandcamp exclusive in April and now available everywhere, Romance’s Fade Into You is descrived as their “first album proper” in the press notes, which is a little confusing, as there are at least a couple of what I’d consider full length releases out there already, as well as their collaborative albums with Dean Hurley. So who knows. But anyway… Fade Into You is a beautiful, delicately textured ambient album loosely inspired by Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s 1972 film The Bitter Tears Of Petra Von Kant – “an unforgiving dissection of the toxic relationship between a haughty fashion designer and a beautiful but icy ingenue” – and continues the mysterious producer’s penchant for warping well known records almost beyond recognition, creating at times eerie but more often than not deeply emotional soundscapes from the resulting wreckage. Presumably there’s some Mazzy Star buried deep in here somewhere; some of the other building blocks are more explicitly labelled.
