OHYUNG – Nevada

Bruce Springsteen had his Nebraska, a bare-bones, notably bleaker record. OHYUNG now has her IOWA; stripped-down and self-produced. Ghostly echoes, mouth sounds, simulated tape hiss, late night gloom. Though beautiful, there’s an illness-of-ease to the music, a fog of threat, numerous points of rupture in otherwise serene tracks, massive subwoofer activations that could be heaven’s kick drum or the slam of a bomb. Sampled choirs in rapture, a fine line between terror and reverence. Happy Friday!

OHYUNG – all dolls go to heaven

Fresh from delivering one of the best albums of last year, OHYUNG returns to the ambient textures they explored so affectingly on 2022’s imagine naked!; my favourite LP of that year. all dolls go to heaven is the lead single from the forthcoming album IOWA, described by the artist as “a memento to my time living in Iowa between 2023 and 2024” and “my ambient transexual version of Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska.”

OHYUNG – dancing on the soft knife

OHYUNG made my favourite album of 2022, the ludicrously under-appreciated ambient masterpiece imagine naked!, and on the basis of my first few listens their latest LP is going to be right up there in 2025. You Are Always On My Mind marks a shift—away from the rawness of their earlier experimental work and towards something more pop-adjacent, but no less nuanced. Built from processed string loops and glistening synths, You Are Always On My Mind is “a declaration of love for raves and the dark hazy rooms that helped me to be free and true with myself – seeing other people who are so free and beautiful and thinking that one day that can be me – that’s me in the future.”
