Mabe Fratti, Bill Ocutt – El inicio es cuestión de suerte

Almost Waking is a collaborative album from Mabe Fratti and Bill Orcutt, bringing together Fratti’s cello, voice and experimental songwriting with Orcutt’s distinctive, often unpredictable guitar playing. Across eight tracks, the pair create something that feels loose and exploratory as cello and guitar weave around each other, occasionally becoming difficult to distinguish, while Fratti’s vocals appear sparingly, adding another layer that drift between inherited folklore and instinctive improvisation.

Efterklang – Plant feat. Mabe Fratti

Loads of interesting albums out today – from Thee Sacred Souls, Dawn Richard, Alessandro Cortini and others – but this is the song that’s made me happiest this week, and even though it officially came out months ago the album it was released on landed last week, so it still counts as new music. Ok? Good. Efterklang was a new name to me and it was Mabe Fratti’s involvement that initially piqued my interest, but after multiple daily listens I think I can now call myself a fan.

Mabe Fratti – Enfrente

I’ve spent a few weeks with Mabe Fratti’s new album Sentir que no sabes now, but it’s just not really doing it for me. Her last couple sounded like nothing else I’ve ever heard, properly visceral and overwhelming in parts, whereas this one just kinda of bobs along. Almost everyone disagrees with me, so maybe I just don’t get it. Enfrente is pretty great though.

Mabe Fratti – Aire

This came out close to a year ago as one of the tracks on Mabe Fratti’s album Será que ahora podremos entendernos, however it’s one of the most extraordinary pieces of music I’ve heard for a while so wanted to bring it to as many people’s attention as possible. The Guatemalan musician combines raging synths and layered feedback with her incredible mastery of the cello to create a singular sound that ranges from the super-chilled meditations of track like Mil Formas de Decirlo to the almost unbearable tension of Aire. Honestly, I don’t know how I missed this when it came out, but I’m very glad I’ve found it now.
