Croatian Amor – Any Path To Touch the Stars / Kites (A Part of You In Eveything)

I’ve spent an awful lot of time searching for “artists that sound like DJ Healer”, and the only one that’s really come close in term of delivering the hazy feels I need is Croatian Amor, especially his more recent work, which seems to be leaning ever further into dreamy breaks and nostalgia-heavy meanderings. These two tracks close his latest album A Part of You in Everything – a companion piece to last year’s Remember Rainbow Bridge, and dedicated to the memory of his younger brother who died at birth. Despite the overwhelming sad genesis of the 8-track collection, the overall effect is more reflective than desolate; a hopeful catharsis beautifully expressed.

Croatian Amor – Young Adult, Common Nettle

I had a sudden epiphany halfway through listening to Croatian Amor’s new album Remember Rainbow Bridge. “Jesus christ – he’s Traumprinz!” He’s not, obviously, but listening to the yearning, nostalgia-inducing tones of Young Adult, Common Nettle – with its billowing synths and samples of ravers waxing lyrical about life in a drug-induced moment of existentialism “‘You don’t have to wait for death to experience ecstasy”), I hope you’ll forgive me for momentarily thinking I’d cracked the Greatest Enigma In The History of Electronic Music ™.

Croatian Amor, Varg2™, Jeuru, CTM – For Us

There are so many artists involved in this I’m not even going to try and dissect it. What makes it even more confusing is that I missed that the Varg I know and love recently became Varg2™ after the German metal band Varg issued a cease and desist (leading to the release of Fuck Varg last year). Say ‘Varg’ again… I dare you!!

But forget all that; forget that if you’re living in the UK life begins to return to something at least vaguely resembling ‘normal’ and ‘fun’ again next week. For now, just listen to this utterly amazingly beautifully heartbreaking record and think about the impermanence and fragility of everything around you until you start to cry.
