Beth Gibbon – Sunday Morning

HELP(2) is a new collaborative album inspired by the landmark 1995 release ‘HELP’, bringing together an impressive array of artist in support of War Child’s vital work delivering immediate aid, education, specialist mental health support, and protection to children affected by conflict around the world. HELP(2) carries forward the spirit of the original ‘HELP’ album and was brought to life under the stewardship of acclaimed producer James Ford as executive producer. The list of artists involved is too extensive to list here, but includes this gem of a cover of The Velvet Underground’s Sunday Morning from Portishead’s Beth Gibbon.

Sega Bodega, Oklou – Komodo

August hasn’t been the most exciting month for new releases, but trance is here to save us once again. Four years ago Oklou and Sega Bodega to cover Italian trance titan Maurco Picotto’s Komodo – which I guess was a very low key version of all those celebs getting together to murder Believe in lockdown – and today it gets a wide release, proving once again that trance is Best Genre Of Music. Komodo (Save a Soul) heavily sampled Deep Forest’s Sweet Lullaby, a reworking of which was included in one of my favourite mixes of all time. So many layers!

Angel Olsen – Eyes Without A Face

Angel Olsen has taken a break from making radio-friendly indie-pop janglers to cover five AAA 80s anthems on new EP Aisles. Like a lot of covers, the less committed you are to the original the more you’re likely to enjoy these: I’m least familiar with Billy Idol’s Eyes Without A Face than anything else on here, and for me her reworking is the clear stand out, with just the right amount of breathy dirge. On the other hand, the mere fact that she’s had a crack at Alphaville’s heartbreaking masterpiece Forever Young is utterly despicable.

58918012 – Street Spirit

Given that this is a cover of one of my very favourite songs from one of my very favourite bands, I’m surprised I enjoy 58918012’s version of Street Spirit as much as I do. But then, I would challenge anyone to identify the source material for this without prior knowledge, as aside from a very (very) mangled, occasional cry of “and fade out again” that sounds like it’s coming from beyond the grave, there is pretty much nothing that links the two. It’s amazing, though, and makes Radiohead’s original sound like a jaunty pop banger by comparison, so deep is the despair it evokes.
