Eartheater – Volcano

I could have picked pretty much any track from Eartheater’s wonderful new album Phoenix: Flames Are Dew Upon My Skin, and breaking the LP into individual parts is definitely not the best way to experience it. There’s so much going on, such a range of emotions and ideas: from seething, clattering orchestral maelstroms to delicately strummed guitars and fragile, shattering vocals. It’s fiercely jagged and incredibly soothing in equal measure and I can’t get enough of it.

William Basinski – O, My Daughter, O, My Sorrow

Like his best-known work, The Disintegration Loops, O, My Daughter, O, My Sorrow is about decay, memory and death, and not since the release of those groundbreaking albums has the focus been quite so stark. It’s the first single from his new LP Lamentations due for release in November, and might just be the most sorrowful piece of ambient I’ve ever heard, with fragments of strings and operatic vocals consigned to the depths of the abyss against a relentless wail of churning feedback loops. “Captured and constructed from tape loops and studies from Basinski‚Äôs archives, Lamentations is over forty years of mournful sighs meticulously crafted into songs” heralds the press release. Roll on November…

ELSZ – Your Rage Is Necessary, Pt. I

One of my favourite tracks of 2018 was ELSZ’s Are You Ok?: a tight, soulful gem with warm vocals and even warmer Rhodes-y chords that makes everything feel brighter, calmer. Listening to Your Rage Is Necessary, Part. I it’s difficult to believe it’s the same artist, so complete is its departure from that carefree record in pretty much every aspect. Turbulent, seething, loosely structured and utterly mesmerising, one would expect this is a single from their forthcoming LP, which will be “dedicated to victims and survivors of gender violence”. On the basis of this at least, we’re in for something quite extraordinary.
