Originally from New Zealand and now based in Melbourne, Hysterical Love Project are the duo of Brooklyn Mellar and Ike Zwanikken, whose third album, February’s Album, recently arrived on Motion Ward. Their music occupies a particularly murky space between trip-hop, shoegaze and experimental electronics, with distant vocals, distorted guitars and heavy, dub-influenced production. Closing track ‘The Moraliser’ is a particular highlight with spiralling guitars, crashing percussion and thick layers of distortion creating something wonderfully disorientating, with a strong sense of melancholy running through the whole thing.
