Nosaj Thing feat. serpentwithfeet – Woodland

Nosaj Thing has just released the best album of his career. Or my favourite at least, which is my little self-obsessed world amounts to the same thing. Continua sees him lean harder into collaboration than ever before, and with a very impressive range of artists; serpentwithfeet, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith and Toro Y Moi not least among them. Picking a focus track is a tough ask as the album flows so beautifully – with a consistent tone and feel yet with enough variation to avoid coming across as one note – but here’s the incredible Woodland with the aforementioned serpentwithfeet to hit you right in the feels.

Xfarm feat. Joy Morgan – Cried

There’s something about that little plaintive piano line that runs through this that’s really got to me. Heavily influenced by the 90’s Bristol trip-hop scene – which, to be honest, is usually a sentence that raises more than a few alarm bells – Cried manages to capture the essence of those hazy, smoked-filled venues while still sounding fresh and interesting. No mean feat.

Penelope Trappes – Red Yellow

With both the overwhelming grandeur of Sevdaliza’s bombastic, electronic-inflected pop and the hushed intimacy of Portishead, Penelope Trappes’s new album Penelope Three which landed on Houndstooth last week is not to be missed. This collision of the extra and introvert are perfectly realised on Red Yellow, a sparse, delicate and extraordinarily punchy highlight.

Victorian Death Photos – Promise (Enki Remix)

Australian producer Enki transforms synth punk artist Victorian Death Photos’ Promise from the billowing shoegaze of the original into a glitchy, stumbling cut that harks back to the atmospheric fug of trip-hop’s 90’s heyday. It’s wonderfully creative, consistently engaging, and moves through at least three different moods, from the gentle ambient of its opening to the malfunctioning robotics of the finale.
