Keeley Forsyth – In The Corner

It’s Friday, the sun is shining, so here’s some deeply paranoid bleakness from Keeley Forsyth’s third album The Hollow which came out today. The album’s title comes from her discovery a long-abandoned mining shaft whilst out walking, while musically it incorporates aspects of minimalist post-classical, dark ambient and film and theatre soundtracks, with occasional warped pitch-shifts of her overwhelmingly mournful vocal for additional headfuckery.

Keeley Forsyth – Land Animal

It’s a testament to the raw artistry of Keeley Forsyth that she manages to make music this bleak a joy to experience. The follow up to 2020’s equally desolate Debris, her latest album Limbs puts her extraordinary voice even more front and centre, often alongside the very sparsest of orchestration. Land Animal is a personal favourite, but at less than 30 minutes long I’d suggest listening to the entire album at least twice through to properly lose yourself in the beautiful sorrow of it all.

Keeley Forsyth – Photograph

Seemingly not content with releasing one of the very best albums of the year, Keeley Forsyth put out a brand new EP, Photograph, last week. The title track was actually out around a month ago but I somehow missed it, and wanted to feature as it’s absolutely extraordinary. Her voice really is like nothing I’ve ever heard before, and coveys so much: angst, vulnerability and sorrow, but also a fierce defiance and resolution. The production is sparse but incredibly powerful, and the entire record strikes a heartbreaking balance between black, bleak misery and fragile optimism.

Keeley Forsyth – Debris

This came out back in October as the lead single from Keeley Forsyth’s debut album Debris, but I’ve only just heard it. Her voice is incredible, kinda like a female Nick Cave, portentous and anguished. Brief, but very powerful.
