Erika de Casier – Lucky

Eriks de Casier announces her forthcoming album Still with new single Lucky, which treads a familiar but nevertheless enjoyable path: warm chords, stripped-back, evocative breaks and plaintive, romantic vocals. The most interesting part of the announcement though is the list of collaborators Casier produces on the album, namely They Hate Change, Shygirl and Blood Orange. Still is out 21 February, so I don’t even need to spend too much time imagining what that will sound like.

Blood Orange – Relax and Run feat. Erika de Casier, Eva Tolkin

If anything it’s surprising it’s taken Devote Hynes and Erika de Casier this long to collaborate, so perfectly do they compliment one another. Taken from the new Blood Orange EP Four Songs, Relax and Run is so ruthlessly up my street I was worried about its potential to underwhelm, but thankfully it’s everything I need it to be.

Erika de Casier – No Butterflies, No Nothing

Erika de Casier’s 2019 album Essentials was hands down one the best LP’s of last year, and came – at least for me – completely out of the blue: fully formed, unique, brilliant. Newly signed to 4AD, No Butterflies, No Nothing is her first new music since then, and is a bit of a departure from her previous work. Where Essentials was light and buoyant – naive almost in its simplicity – the production on No Butterflies… is much darker and more complex, reminiscent of something like Kelela’s Frontline. Still great, just in a different, slightly more intimidating way.
