GENA – This Is So Crazy

GENA (short for “God Energy, Naturally Amazing,”) is a new collaborative project from drummer and producer Karriem Riggins and singer-songwriter, rapper, and producer Liv.e. Their debut The Pleasure Is Yours is informed by jazz, soul, and hip-hop, with enough electronic weirdness to keep me happy. There’s definitely something about this that feels special, I’m just not entirely sure I love it yet. What I do know however is that This Is So Crazy is insanely good, coming in like Prince’s I Could Die For You as seen through a spectral haze.

Liv.e – Mashed Feelings

Live’s new LP (EP? mixtape?) is a pretty tough listen in places. The hecticness of the opening track almost seems designed to put you off, but you’ve settled into its crunchy, super-lofi aesthetic, there are a few moments of genuine brilliance, Mashed Feelings among them. It’s unlikely to generate quite the same hype as last year’s Girl In The Half Pearl, but it’s still definitely worth a listen.

Liv.e – Snowing!

I’m a bit late to the party on this one as it feels like everyone’s been singing the praises of Liv.e’s new album Girl In the Half Pearl for some time now, but I just couldn’t risk the ire of the music blogging community so am jumping on the appreciation bandwagon. Also: it’s really great, and about as varied an album as you’re likely to find anytime soon, from the full on soul balladry of Wild Animals to the arpeggiated chaos of Snowing!.
